SIMON PARKER
Simon Parker is Otamatea's first All Black. At
119kg the 25 year old uncapped loose forward
was described as “intimidating” by All Blacks’
head coach Scott Robertson
He didn’t get a chance to play in Argentina last
week, but will be capped on Sunday 24th
August (NZ time). Eyes on the number 8 jersey
everyone.
Who else remembers Simon Parker at Otamatea
High School. The Kaiwaka Bugle has been
following Parker’s rugby history since he was
in the under 16 Hawks.Note excerpts to the left
and below.

FRIDAY
DEADLINE 2025:
26 September
24 October

12 December
Western Walkway Completed
Finally the last piece of the puzzle for the Western walkway
to connect the footbridges in Kaiwaka has been completed.
As we go to print the opening of the footpath between the two footbridges at
Oneriri Rd and McClean Park will have taken place.
This project has taken some years to complete starting with a concept from
Kaiwaka Can Inc lead by the then chairman Derek Christensen. The concept to
make a safe connection for the businesses on the Western side of State Highway
One. Kaiwaka-Mangawhai ward Councilor Jonathan Larsen (now the Deputy
Mayor) lobbied Hon. Shane Jones who was at the time the Minister for Regional
Economic Development, to support the project. The funding was secured but
there was ultimately not enough to also complete the linking footpath. Thanks to
Deputy Mayor Jonathan Larsen Councilors Rachael Williams and Mike
Howard, and Mayor Craig Jepson we were able to finally acquire the funding to
complete the footpath component of the project.
A big thank you also has to go out to Eutopia Cafe, The Cheese Shop, Archers
and Kaiwaka Clothing for their cooperation in getting the project done. Also
Wharehine Contractors for going above and beyond to give us this incredible
asset. Eutopia also to be thanked for the planting and tidying of the corner
between State Highway One and Oneriri Rd.
With all this done it links both McClean Parks where plans are well on the way
for a pontoon in McClean Park 1947 and a skate park in McClean Park 2022,
both projects needing considerable funds to complete, so we are looking for
donations to move forward. Contributors will be acknowledged.

WEATHER
July
I thought June was a wet month but it
was soundly beaten by July. We had
451ml for the month of July over 19
days.
This year is the highest I have recorded
for July, since keeping records. The
lowest I have recorded for July was in
2013 with a mere 45.5ml.
In the Hakaru Valley, Derek recorded
292ml over 19 days.
A week of frosts and beautiful days
was a lovely change and they dried the
ground out a wee bit but then the next
week it rained harder than before, to
send the ground right back to soggy
again. There has been a lot of strong
wind but not warm enough to dry
things out.
The Brynderwyn waterfall is as
beautiful as ever and flowing well after
all that rain.
Cheers, Karen.

In times of uncertainty and economic
challenge, gardening offers a return to
what truly matters — connection,
purpose, and community.
This year’s theme – Communities in
bloom – aims to make communities
better through gardening – social
connection, improved mental health,
nurturing green spaces and natural
beauty, as well as growing your own
food.
Flowers are important for your
garden’s overall health with many
acting as pest deterrents and attracting
important pollinator insects. Look

SPRING HAS SPRUNG
Daffodils in the garden, lambs 10
weeks ago. Now I feel positively
dangerous. And spring is around the
corner.
I'm in the ‘spring is the 1st of
September’ camp. I know there's
debate. But I can't wait for all that
energy. Now is the time to sort out
seeds for planting. I already have
bees pollinating broad beans I
planted in autumn. Today I've sown
more plus peas in the greenhouse.
Next week I'll really get into it.
Fingers crossed for good weather.

ROTARY FOR SEPTEMBER 2025
Members
of
the
Otamatea Interact Club
have
enjoyed
participating in activities
at the Maungaturoto Rest
Home. During the first
session,
Bingo
was
played and in the second,
a Trivia quiz based on general
knowledge from ‘50s and ‘60s
provided some challenges. It is quite
special the way these young people
relate to the residents and they always
work alongside one or two residents.
After the games there is a time for
sharing, so that each group is able to
learn more about the other. This has
turned out to be a very positive
initiative. At 7pm on the 17 th
September, at the Maungaturoto
Country Club, there will be a chance to
meet the Otamatea candidates for the
upcoming elections (who are able to
make themselves available). The Club
is affiliated to the Maungaturoto
Country Club and we do endeavor to
support that facility when we can. We
did have a team in at the recent Quiz
night but have decided that for those
quizzes, a good mix of ages is an
essential element, something we didn’t
have. However, a much more
successful initiative was the invitation
to Kate Hawley to speak at the Club.
Many of us were unaware of her
accomplishments but she was able to
hold
her
audience
enthralled
throughout the presentation.
Kate’s involvement in films has seen
her work with a number of well-known
directors including Peter Jackson and
Guillermo del Toro and in the near
future she will be going to America for
the post- production of Frankenstein, in
which she was able to work with
archived jewels from Tiffany’s, which
Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at
Tiffany’s. (Only the second time they
have been used since then.) Kate says
that home is a creative, inspiring place.
The mist and colours of Arcadia valley
inspire her. “Small things matter”. E.g.
the dew on a spider’s web can look like
jewels. Kate was a winner of a RNZ
Young Achiever’s award which took
her to London and on her return she
met Peter Jackson. Kate uses many
natural dyes and textures, designing
each of the hobbits’ costumes
individually. Prior to developing
costumes for the actors in Tolkien’s
work, she made copious notes and at
the same time she also referred to
Tolkien’s original drawings. As a
result of this presentation, Kate has
very generously offered her time to
work with some of the budding young
artists who attended. If you would like
to join us for any activities, even if you
don’t want to join us for a meal, please
get in touch with a Rotarian. We are
eagerly seeking new ideas. Eileen

REMEMBERING THE END OF
WW2
On 2 September 1945, Japan’s formal surrender marked the
official end of the Second World War, following
Germany’s capitulation in May and Japan’s announcement
in August. Around the world, years of war, deprivation, and
separation gave way to jubilation, though the challenges of
recovery lay ahead.
In New Zealand, news of Japan’s surrender arrived at 11
a.m. on 15 August. Sirens sounded, a national ceremony
was held, and communities celebrated with parades, music,
church
services,
bonfires, dances, and
sports. In Auckland,
festivities began the
moment the factory
whistle
blew,
with
people
drinking,
dancing, and scattering
confetti.
The
joy
however,
turned
unruly—bottle throwing
and vandalism left 51
injured and 15 tons of
broken glass in the
streets.

Help Us Identify a Piece of Wellsford's Early Commercial History!
As part of our upcoming 2026 Albertland Heritage Museum Calendar, we’re
featuring shops and businesses from the first 40 years of our town's
development. One of the buildings we’re interested in is shown in the photo
above — it sat just below the Rodney Hotel, on the left-hand side heading south.
In the 1940s, this building was home to Jno. Grey Real Estate, a business that
proudly operated seven branches between Auckland and Whangarei. But what
we’d love to know is:
Did Jno. Grey build this building when he first set up in Wellsford?
If so, in what year was it constructed?
Does anyone remember the building being built or know what stood there
before?
Do you recall any of the other businesses or people associated with this building
over the years?
We're reaching out to our community, especially those who may have memories
or family stories connected to this era. Even the smallest detail could help us
piece together the puzzle.
Please feel free to comment below or get in touch with the Albertland Heritage
Museum if you can help. Your memories matter — and they help bring our
town’s history to life for future generations!

DAFFODIL DAY Friday 29 AUGUST
Why is Tāne the Taniwha sporting a giant daffodil?
You may have noticed our mascot looking a little different –
and there’s a powerful reason behind it.
This year, Northland Rugby proudly carries the Cancer
Society logo on the front of our NPC jersey. Cancer has touched our Northland
whānau deeply – including our own Women’s Rugby Lead, Cheryl Waaka, who
is courageously facing stage 4 bowel cancer. Cheryl means so much to us all,
and her fight is a reminder of how many of our families, friends, and teammates
are affected.
Northland has the highest rate of
cancer diagnoses in New Zealand.
Together, we can change that.
Every donation helps the Cancer
Society fund life-saving research,
provide vital support services, and
stand beside those impacted by
cancer here in our community.
Donate now and make a
difference:

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
DVDS - SOME TO BORROW, SOME TO BUY
We've had a change-around on the DVD shelves recently.
This included swapping the titles we were holding from
Dargaville Library with some fresh stock, and doing a
cull of our own titles that weren't being borrowed, which
are now for sale.
Come in and take a look at the new titles ready to be
borrowed, and at the ones for sale. The sale ones are on a
small shelf just inside the main library room, opposite the
counter.
Like the books for sale, they're 50c each, or 3 for $1. You
can combine them with books from the sale shelves - we
just count the total number of items and price them
together so you get the best price.
BOOK REVIEW
I've recently finished The Martian
Contingency by Mary Robinette
Kowal. It's the 4th installment in the
Lady Astronaut series, based around
Elma York, an accomplished former
WWII pilot, and her efforts to get into
the space program in the 1950s after a
huge meteor strikes Earth - a global
warming event that will eventually see
the oceans boil, so the plan is to get a
habitat set up on Mars so humanity isn't
entirely wiped out. Do read the books
in order - they're all on our shelves.
(1) The Calculating Stars, (2) The Fated Sky, (3) The
Relentless Moon, (4) The Martian Contingency.
I've also read more of the Dana
Russo series of thrillers by S.R.
White, Prisoner, Red Dirt Road,
and White Ash Ridge. Russo is an
Australian police detective, with a
haunted past of her own which
shapes the way she sees the
world. She has a reputation for
coming at her investigations in a
different way to the 'usual' methods,
which is frowned on by some - but
she also solves every case she's
given. Read the books in order, we
have all 4 on our shelves.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
